In Memoriam: Rick Smith

Richard D. Smith 1953 – 2016


Richard D. Smith age 63 of Southfield, Michigan passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 11th, 2016.  He was born March 3, 1953 in Jackson, Michigan to Alden F. & Marian W. (Willett) Smith.  Rick graduated from Adrian High School in 1971 and was a very dedicated member of the Maples Swim Team, choir and performing arts throughout his high school years.  He attended Western Kentucky University and RETS Institute of Technology in Toledo receiving a certificate in Electronics.  Rick also served in the United States Navy from 1972 until 1975.

On October 28, 1978 he married Laura M. Adams in Adrian, Michigan and they enjoyed a wonderful and loving marriage for close to 39 years, Laura survives.  In 1982, he accepted a position with Xerox Corporation and relocated with his family to the metropolitan Detroit area, retiring in 2013 after a long and successful career.  Family was the most important thing in Rick’s life, he was a devoted father to his three children and five grandchildren, actively supporting them throughout many years of sports & other activities.  In addition to family, Rick was passionate about his involvement with Nativity Episcopal Church where he was a parish leader and sang in the choir.  He loved music and he also loved cooking, especially for large family gatherings including hosting Thanksgiving for the entire family for the past 24 years.  However, above all, Rick would tell you that his greatest accomplishment was his children Cory D. (Kathy) Smith of Waterford, MI; Adam F. Smith of Birmingham, MI; Crystal M. (Alex) Levine of Chelsea, MI; and his grandchildren Stephen Levine, Joshua Levine, Zachary Levine, Alissa Smith and Dylan Smith, all of which survive.  Rick is also survived by his father Alden F. Smith of Adrian; David F. Smith of League City, TX; Suzanne K. Smith of Adrian.  He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Marian W. (Willett) Smith.   Rick will be remembered as a very generous, kind and loving man with a huge heart for those he loved and he will be greatly missed by all.

Family only will gather for burial services with military honors on Tuesday, August 16th at 9:30 a.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road in Holly MI.  A memorial service open to all friends and family will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Nativity Episcopal Church, 21220 W. 14 Mile Road in Bloomfield Hills.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
